About three weeks ago I took a last minute road trip to Burlington, Vermont. I was hanging out at a venue called The Monkey House and saw a band setting up. The guitar players had some hip vintage amps and the drummer was setting up an electric sample pad next to his drumset. I began to get a little excited. Then during the sound check when they started busting out 4 part, Greatful Dead-esk vocal harmonies, I lost it! I have a soft spot for The Dead and these guys did them vocal justice. They put on a great set. Check these guys out if you are in Burlington! I kept running into their signs all over the city. They're doing a lot of local playing. Their drummer Todd is a nice dude and a bad-ass player.

On our way back from Interlochen, we made a stop over at my parents house in LaSalle, MI. We thought that we were going to have to leave again the next day to drive down to Indiana University for a concert, but when we got a last minute call informing us that the gig was cancelled, our plans changed. We had some time on our hands, so in true Blue Collar fashion, we got right down to business. What kind of business you ask?...

SNOW DAY!!!

We got off to a bang with our first activity.

Event #1: GUITAR HERO CHALLENGE
Challengers: ROSS MINTZER VS. GREG EVANS
Rules: HIGHEST SCORE ON "FREE BIRD" WINS. THE LOSER DOES ONE COMPLETE ROLL IN THE SNOW, NAKED.

...Ross won, I will leave the rest up to your imagination...

After a feverish bout of button pushing, intense eye staring, brow sweating, and plenty of trash talking (greg:"I'M OLD GREGGG MUTHA LICKA!!! WHATA YA DOIN IN MY WATERS ROSS?!?!") we were all a little exhausted, so we decided to take things down a notch the only way we know how...building snow men and enjoying the view of frozen Lake Eerie.

After that, we were recharged and ready for more head to head competition, but we knew it wasn't going to be simple. Not much can top a Guitar Hero battle, especially one as intense as Ross and Greg's, so we knew we were going to have to dig pretty deep to come up with something...
and since all of us are well versed and enthusiastic fans of Mike O'Mally and his legendary Nickolodean TV Show "Global Gutz", we knew just what we needed to do. O'Mally had the Agro-Krag, but ladies and gentleboys, we had MT. REMINGTON!

REMINGTON HOMECOMING: INTERLOCHEN ARTS ACADEMY: 3-2-08

On March 3rd, we drove up into the northern land of Michigan to visit Ross and I's old stomping grounds: The Interlochen Arts Academy. We graduated from highschool there and had not made it back for a long while, so for those of you that have had the oportunity to revisit those memories of your adolesence with new eyes, it is needless to say that we had quite a time being back.
Thank you to all of the students who made it out. I hope it was an enjoyable evening for you!

Brand New Remington EP (on the way..)

Today, we began mixing our new EP. We’ve spent the last 5 days tracking at our beloved, Blue Collar Music Studio. Thanks to the help from our amazing and knowledgeable sound engineer, Alex Deturk, this session is looking to be a real nice one. The band has yet to decide a release date or a title for this EP. Tomorrow, we head out to play some shows in Mid-West America. Sunday night, we’re excited to play at Interlochen Arts Academy. (Mike and I went to high school there.)

Remington Party- Downtown NYC

Adolescent Art Dig #7: Just When You Thought It Was Over

I really truly thought this was over but here we are. Eric Rivera (Cologne Factory, Magic Tricks) busts out an old DVD of my movies and low and behold, "The Bumblebee Song," one I had almost completely forgotten about, sits patiently in its menu waiting for me to pluck! This is the first song Andrew Mills (Magic Tricks) or here, Malden Swirl made in good ol' garage band, the greatest thing to happen to our group of friends...ever? Like "Knife in the Road," Bumblebee is much less a music video than a dialogueless caper that has nothing to do with the song but when convenient, cuts with the music. Again, for some reason the chronology of my short life is surprisingly hazy, so I'm not quite sure what year this was but I do remember that we shot the whole thing out of boredom and in less than 5 hours! This included traveling and talking people into being in it. No shot was attempted more than twice and usually only once, which, upon looking back is perhaps the only real way to make movies, huh?
A true collaboration, this one has all the Eric Rivera staples: A stick-up, A break-up, and an out-and-out loser. Some highlights are the feces-emulating chocolate bar/mustard stains on Dan Shattuck's (yellowing) whitey-tighties, Patrick Thurber's unzipped fly, and the grandpa mask, which has been resurfacing again and again since we were all wee lads in Northwest Indiana and occasionally would see people that looked just like it!

Radio Bean!...In Vermont with Remington

Last weekend, Remington played in Burlington, Vermont at the wonderful coffee shop, Radio Bean. It was a great trip...

We were driving from Syracuse, NY were we had played the night before. First, we had to drive through all the mountains and snow until we reached the beautiful but cold Lake Champlain...

Then, we had to board the Essex ferry so that we could cross Lake Champlain...

Then we drove 20 more minutes into the city of Burlington, home of University of Vermont and of the band Phish. We arrived at Radio Bean and played a set of acoustic music...

And last but not least, we packed up and took a seat to enjoy the closing act: Wolff. Wolff was a fellow New Yorker who played tuba and sang through an extensive pedal board of loop machines and effects. It was incredible!...

It truly was an amazing trip. Thank you for having us Radio Bean, we will see you again soon!

Remington at Jazz Central

Remington played in Syracuse last Saturday at the venue Jazz Central. It was a great show that featured two special guests, Syracuse natives Tom Bronzetti on guitar and Andy Carroll on piano. A writer from the Syracuse Post-Standard came out to write a review of the show, which you can click on the title of this post to see. Jazz Central is quite a venue indeed! I am looking foreward to playing there in the future and would encourage anyone in that area to check it out if a taste for live music strikes you.

Remington Party NYC- $5 dollars at the door, all you can drink, a t-shirt, and more!

Here are some photos from the most recent Remington Party thrown in NYC. The location was the upper west side of Manhattan in a beautiful apartment provided by one of Remington's dearest friends, the gracious and gregarious PJ Cinque. The party was a smashing success thanks to all of you who made it out. We love you. A special thanks goes out to Alex Seaver, who was the first man ever to take AND complete the Remington Challenge. Alex, you are a strong soul. You can take my word for it when I assure you that your bravery and grace under fire did not go unoticed.

The DNA In All Of Us

Just cut my very own version of a Cologne Factory original entitled "The DNA In Me." It's part of a cover project that will be handed out, free of charge at Magic Tricks shows, the band who currently performs the bang-zoom (what?) hit. P. Thurber had this to say about it:

ADAIRSTAR (caps added) has submitted his version entitled: 3 Glasses of Chocolate Milk (the DNA in Me). If "smoking all the cigarettes you bring" was chalked up to genetic fatalism in the original, Adairstar's jonesing is of a considerably more kindergarten kind. However, in true Adairstar form, this version of the song is a dark, glamorous and sleazy combination of spoken dialogue, children cheering, pounding 808 drum machines and plenty of the eyebrow-raising production techniques that many of us have come to love. If a scant 3 glasses of chocolate milk had anything to do with his mind-state during the creation of this song, then we had better reevaluate our elementary school diet guidelines...the kids are almost certainly not all right.

Adair Takes Polls By Storm!

They say in the theatre, "There is no part too small." While we may not believe it when we're playing the "Tree" in the 1st grade production of Little Red Riding Hood, this saying does hold true in the 2008 Primary Election. Let me tell you folks, I pulled down the little lever on the side of that voting box thing like I've never pulled down a little lever on the side of a voting box thing before! Partially because I was so gung-ho about being part of one of the few (and possibly only?) great things this country still has going for it (the democratic process) and partially because I truly had just never done that before. But I couldn't have done it without the help of my new friends, André, Cheikh (pronounced check), Regina, and Judea. All of whom welcomed me into the table of the 56th district of New York City with open arms. Not only did we have by far the most votes cast from our district (366, almost double last year's number according to Cheikh, and you'll find he's a real trustworthy guy) but we were also clearly the coolest table of poll-workers in the room.

That's Cheikh on the left and André on the right. This terribly fuzzy picture doesn't do either of their handsome mugs any kind of justice. Cheikh says, "I like to see young feet get wet. If you come in November, you might be Chairperson of table. Who knows, it can happen to anyone, you see?" Here's hoping, Cheikh.

You've already seen André, but this picture was way too fly to just sit on my hard drive. André says, "The future of telecommunications is in video conferencing." I think he's on to something.

Cheikh reads Regina the results of the day. Regina says she's an "Obama Mama" and adds, "if you take (her) picture (she'll) kill you." I told her I was zooming in on Cheikh's nose. Later, Cheikh took his phone out and confessed to me that he also took a picture of her, explaining, "This is what I am deleting right now because it is not me to hurt someone." Aww shucks, Cheikhy. You're a better man than I.

And now for the results! That's Clinton with 149, Edwards with 4, Obama with 190, and Kucinich with a proud and defiant 2. Which is, cool. I mean, it's cool Dennis. But ultimately, it looks like there's a lot of Obama mamas and papas in the 56th district.

It's important to know that BCM holds no one, unifying political position, just that you take some time to read about the candidates, ya know, get yourself edumicated before the likes of myself, Adair, pull the lever on the side of your voting box thing. It's better to not vote at all than to vote blindly, or something.

Hello Hello!

This was a side project I got involved in last October while the band I play with, Remington, was on a little break. I was listening heavy to Philip Glass's record Glassworks(1982, Sony Masterworks MK 37265). I thought it would be cool to try out some ideas I had with the recording. I recreated each piece on the album in different ways, excluding "Islands", using Garageband on my Mac. I didn't use any microphones beside the onboard mic inside my computer. For all the musical additions I made, I used my keyboard as a "musical" keyboard.

Floe - This is an original song I wrote to go along with his piece.

Rubric - Topical Song vs. Minimalism (The Ultimate Mash-Up) I like to think of this as an original cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin In The Wind".

Adolescent Art Dig #6: I Found a Salamander in My Backyard...

This one's scurry, and long, but worth it. Who am I to say that? I'm not sure which grade it's from but I can remember Eric calling me. "Hey, I found a salamander stuck in the window trench behind my house. He's gonna die down there probably, wanna make a movie?" Six hours later, we were all covered in mud, mosquito bites and in the case of poor Chris Bolint, (dinosaur) one of the worst cases of poison ivy any of us have ever heard of. He went to Florida a week later covered in it, was given medicine that burned his skin, then entered the salty ocean, burning his skin even deeper. The price of a pitch-perfect performance.
As far as the ripping-off of The Shining goes, I hadn't yet seen it. I heard about the composer Penderecki through a Radiohead interview and chopped his music up to fit. When I saw The Shining I felt like a fraud.

I thought that I would partake in Andrew Adair's excavation of high school projects by contributing one of my own. This is a live recording of me playing Vincent Persichetti's Parable XVII for Double Bass. This was from a recital that I put on while I was in high school at the Interlochen Arts Academy. I think I was 17. This is just one of the 25 parables that Persichetti wrote. If you have never heard of him and/or are intrigued by this performance, you should check him out, he was a pretty bad dood.

I'm not from Ohio, i just go to school there. still, for whatever reason, i find myself pleased to hear that any ohio band is doing well. Here's Times New Viking, from Columbus. Pitchfork said their new album is an 8 with a high tenth decimal degree. honestly, that rating system is so fucking clunky and vague!! it's 2008 guys!

I, Mountain Maid, give Times New Viking's album "Rip It Off" a 7.643535353535. yep, that's a repeating "35," i just couldn't figure out how to put the little line on top. and NO, this does not mean that you can just round my rating off to a dinky 7.6...or even a 7.644! P.S. i'll lay out my schema for evaluating music on a later blog, but let me just say...you won't be able to replicate the results with an old box of transistor tubes and a hand-cranked radiometer, you by-the-seat-of-your-leather-pants technologista! the only sufficient serial reconvalescent pathway is made-to-order in Russia!! HA!

Go ahead, you can sit back down, Hitler is indeed still deceased but he lives on in this silent Hinojosa/Adair film collabo from back in the dizzle. In this, the third "Adolescent Art Dig!" piece, the boys ask the question we've all been scratching our heads over for 63 years: "What would have happened if Hitler hadn't died?" The answer? Hilarity ensues! That is until Hitler finds new excitement in a beautiful young lady whose religion is not quite clear...just how far is Hitler willing to go for love? Last spring when my dear friend Ross turned twenty, I knew that I had to give him something from the heart, so I wrote him a song. For any of you who missed out on the joyous explosion of humanity and love that Ross's birthday party was (a sushi dinner with me, his sister, and his parents) have no fear; for the moment is now forever preserved and can be visited/re-lived each and everyday through this little song. This was a video invitation we gave to our friends for our first show at The Bowery Poetry club. Mike, in a bath tub, pours an ENTIRE bottle of wine into a glass(to the soundtrack of Enya’s Orinoco Flow). To me this truly captures the essence of what a Remington Show is all about….

Adolescent Art Dig #2: So Many Utrenjas in the neighborhood...

This was quite a find. Our high school had an event called "Air Band" in which students would build their own instruments and lip-sync to their favorite pop songs....orrrrr you could take your mom's living room lamps and craft a three-man light show to Penderecki's "Utrenja" and Ween's "So Many People in the Neighborhood". The second installment of my pretentious, "Adolescent Art Dig!" is some footage of our first (only) rehearsal. The fun is in the details on this one. Notice Chris Bolint's (left) deadpan face during Ween and listen for my yelling cue to cut the lights at the silence in "Utrenja," which Derek (right) misses because he decided that was a good time to stretch. High school was not the most magical time of our lives as so many claim, but moments like these made the rest worth it.

P.S. The boys are bitter to this day because I backed out of the performance only days before we were to go on. I felt we weren't ready. Really? Not ready? It was a high school lip-syncing show. Who's ready for that? And if someone is, I might ask them...why?

Something About The 90's

I don't know what quality it is that 90's pop music possesses, but whatever it is, it warms my soul and makes me feel like I'm eleven years old again. Today I was on iTunes and came across two songs from my childhood; "I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis and "As I Lay Me Down" by Sophie B. Hawkins. This afternoon for about an hour, these songs took me back to 4th grade class. Back in Liverpool NY where it snowed in October and the school day ended with that activity recess. Ah....the good old days.

Remington's Mike Thurber perfoms with banjo player Bela Fleck on NPR

In 2006, I had the chance to play a concert with the banjo player Bela Fleck at Denison University in Ohio. The concert was broadcast live on National Public Radio as part of a young classical musicians showcase called "From The Top". During my portion of the show, Bela and I played a duo arrangement of his tune "Sunset Road", as well as J.S. Bach's E minor Three-Part Invention with a young violinist named Caroline Goulding.

Adolescent Art Dig!

Lately, I've been reminiscing an awful lot via the short films I made in high school. Scattered about on various DVD-Rs and MiniDV tapes, they're mainly found in moving boxes and closet rubbermaid containers. In the case of this little 11th grade gem, it was the dusty depths of my friend's entertainment center that was a-harborin'. This is probably the first of many finds in my ongoing excavation that I will abashedly deem postable.

Remington at the Blind Pig, Ann Arbor, MI

This is a photo from a show Remington played back in October at the "Blind Pig" in Ann Arbor, MI. And yes, the photo below that is indeed a group of 15 year old girls that all happened to buy Remington shirts and watched the show. It was a wonderful time for all ages, but if you missed us then, worry not! We will be back at the Blind Pig on March 6th, 08' for a double bill with Ann Arbor's own "Farewell Republic". Remington Summer Music Camp

Every summer, Remington runs a series of two-week long music camps around the country. These are a few photos from the end of camp concert that we put on with a group of campers from two summers ago in Michigan. That is Ross (Remington guitarist/vocalist) on the far right of the stage (bottom photo) and I am chilling in the back on the keyboard!
